Our History
The Piedmont Progressive Farmers Group began as a 501(c)3 not for profit entity in the early 2000’s. A group of local Caswell County African American farmers worked together to assist each other as well as those interested in becoming a part of a group cooperating together. Educational programs on how to write a farm business plan, how to manage the operation and how to collect data for better decision making all helped to build the organization.
The group began with pasture raised chickens and established relationships with several buyers in the Research Triangle Park. Before long, there was a demand for 100’s of dozens of eggs each week. More farmers joined in the group raising more hens. Eventually the nonprofit, reached their goal to transition the operations into a cooperative as over 1000 dozen of eggs were needed weekly. The fully functioning cooperative known as Piedmont Progressive Farmers Cooperative (PPFC) now operates and continues to grow.
Areas We Serve
The Piedmont Progressive Farmers Group covers the Piedmont (north central) region of northern North Carolina and southern Virginia. Also referred to as the Dan River Region, PPFG defines their service area as counties lying within a 75 mile radius of Caswell County, NC. The targeted counties include North Carolina Ccunties: Caswell, Rockingham, Guilford, Alamance, Orange, Person, Stokes, Forsyth, & Randolph; Virginia Counties: Pittsylvania, Henry, Halifax
